How to find the ICF’s furring strips behind the drywall that’s already been installed?
For lighter items you have two primary options:
- A magnet type stud finder will detect the drywall screws embedded in the furring strips and will indicate the location of the furring strips.
- Another option is to just use course threaded plastic or metal phillips head E-Z anchors and to not necessarily try to find the furring strips at all. Once you screw the anchor through the drywall layer you will either hit an ICF furring strip, or the ICF’s foam. You are good either way.

For heavier items such as cabinets or heavy mirrors, there are also two options:
- Fasten to the wall with tap con screws through drywall and the ICF foam layer and into the concrete core by at least 1”.
- Cut the area of drywall out, replace with flush ½” plywood (in most cases) and fasten the drywall panel to the ICF furring strips. Fasten the heavier item to the plywood panel.
